Sizing

Please keep in mind that the Walkin’ Front Splints are designed to support the lower part of the legs. They will not stabilize the elbow on the front leg.

If you have a cat and are interested in these splints, you will need to order the XXSmall or XSmall Splint, depending on the size of your cat. See chart.

A: Measure from end of longest toenail to midpoint between carpal pad and elbow.
B: Measure from end of longest toenail to just above carpal pad.
C: To measure paw width, place dog’s paw on ground so there is a natural splay, and measure the widest part.

It is recommended that you measure the dog in a standing position, if possible.
If joint is swollen due to arthritis or other medical condition, go up a size to accommodate swelling, and adjust fit using the Walkin’ Splint Custom Fit Foam.

Additional Front Splint Measurements

We know patients come in all shapes and sizes. To make it easier to select the right size splint for your client, here are a few additional measurements:

Splint SizeLeg Width at CarpalBack of Paw to Carpal
XXSmall0.75”1.75”
XSmall0.75”2”
Small1.375”2.625”
Medium1.375”2.625”
Large1.25”3.625”
XLarge1.5”3.5”

For the most accurate width measurement, we recommend placing a piece of paper behind your patient’s leg and making a mark on either side of the leg at the carpal joint. Once complete, measure the distance between those two marks to determine the width of the pet’s leg

FAQ

How long should the Walkin’ Front Splint be worn?
Splints are not designed to be left on pets for extended periods of time. Pet’s should be introduced to the splint by slowly fitting the splint onto the pet as instructed in the Patient Resource Guide: How to Introduce a Splint to Your Pet

When splint is removed, your patient may still benefit from lighter leg support. We recommend they wear the Walkin’ Wrist Hugger at nighttime or when splint is removed.

How do I use the Walkin’ Front Splint?
Injuries to the lower limb of small animals often need to be splinted or braced. These splints can be used on the lower front leg for stability and support and are available in a full range of sizes to accommodate comfortably. Inform your clients that pets should always be supervised when using the splint.

Where do I put the splint?
The Walkin’ Splints are placed on the back of the front leg and held in place by padded touch fastener closure straps. They extend about halfway up the leg. The bottom of the splint extends completely under the paw to provide weight-bearing support. This is ideal for fractures, knuckling and other ailments.

What are the splints made of?
Splints are made of hard plastic with a soft foam lining and a non-skid pad on the bottom. The non-skid pad will not work well on some slippery surfaces. Before using the splint, test it on the surface to make sure it will grip adequately.

How will I know if the splint fits well and how long to wear it?
Splints should be used only when recommended by a pet care professional and will vary from case to case based of patient’s need. Work with your client to determine whether a splint is appropriate, how long it should be worn, and what problems might occur that would indicate that use of the splint should be discontinued. Possible problems may include chafing, muscle atrophy, or extreme distress of the animal.

How should I start using it on my pet?
Every patient is different, and we recommend you guide your customer throughout their pet’s course of treatment. When educating clients please refer to the Patient Resource Guide: How to Introduce a Splint to Your Pet for step by step instructions on how to begin using the splint.

How do I put the splint on?
Initial splint fitting and adjustment should be completed with the guidance of a Veterinary Professional. Putting a thin sock on the leg before applying the splint is sometimes more comfortable for the dog. Splints should be ideally be applied on a standing animal. You may apply to an animal laying down. Just make sure to check the fit and retighten straps if needed when they stand up. Starting at the bottom, place the foot flat in the bottom of the splint. Make sure that the toes do not extend over the bottom edge. Snug the bottom strap first and work your way up the splint. Check for a snug fit after the animal has taken a few steps. When tightened correctly you should be able to comfortably slide a finger under each strap.

My dog seems to fall in between sizes in your chart; should I order the larger size?
If your pet’s measurement falls between sizes, please call us at 1-866-578-2926 and our Veterinary Resources Team will help you to determine the correct size. To accommodate swollen limbs or malformations, most customers order a size larger than needed and insert adhesive foam to customize fit.

Can I change or remold the splint with heat?
Yes, using a heat gun the splint can be heated to modify the splint width. In most cases, it is recommended to order one splint size larger than needed and customize fit using insert adhesive foam.

Does the splint have any tread or soiling on the bottom so the dog will not slip?
Yes, the splint features a rubber, non-skid pad on the bottom for traction.

Do the splints have any padding inside, and can it be cleaned?
Yes, the splints are fully lined with foam and may be spot cleaned and left to air dry. If additional padding is needed, please use with the Custom-Fit Foam Kit.
